Reflections on a critical friend

Viv has been my critical friend this year.  I've really enjoyed all our varied discussions - we've used a variety of ways to stay in contact - Facebook messenger, text, email, face-to-face (at our local!).

On several occasions being able to connect at the end of a particularly difficult week over a pint and snacks has meant I went into the weekend with a lighter heart and feeling less stressed.

One thing I want to do next year is continue our meetings - Viv and I, as well as several other local NAPPers, have connected really well and we all want to build on what we've enjoyed this year. I'd also like to be able to visit Viv at school - they are doing some fabulous things with their class groupings and I'd like to see them in action.

Leadership can be really isolating and developing friends and support outside of your immediate circle at school is very healthy - especially for your mental health.

Thanks heaps Viv for helping keep me (mostly) sane this year. I couldn't have done it without you!

Life throws some interesting things at us

Posted on 21 November 2016, 17:35

Last week I was supposed to attend our final NAPP hui with the rest of my Wellington cohort. There we would have shared our pepeha and our inquiry summary. Unfortunately there was an earthquake which caused some of us to make the decision to stay closer to home and school and to be available for both family and school family.

This reminds me that in our profession you can't plan for everything - there are often (daily) interruptions that prevent you from doing what you had intended. It seems to me as a leader that this is even greater than 'just' as a teacher - because you're not just thinking about the students in your class, you're thinking about the students in your team, your school, and their families.

Leadership isn't an easy or light thing - there are many things we have to deal with that aren't always understood by the people we are working alongside.
