MobilesSome thoughts on how mobile devices (iPods, mobile phones etc.) can be used at Albany Senior High School. We have a fast wireless network that allows students to connect using any device. Most of our learning environments are web-based which means that they may be accessed by any device capable of connecting to the internet.

The mobile phone continues to undergo a process known as 'convergence' whereby perviously separate devices merge into a single item. Whereas previously we had separate phones, still cameras, video cameras, mp3 players, GPSs, voice recorders, barcoder readers and compasses, now all of these exist in one device in the smartphone.

The challenge for educator is 'how do we take these things and use them for learning?'

Why m-learning?

  • Anywhere, any time. our students are 'always on', and their devices are alway 'on them'
  • Engagement through multimedia: video, audio, image
  • Location-aware: place learning in context
  • Put the learning device in the hands of the learner
  • Differentiation: quick lookups of terms, definitions, people, places
