Writing about Reading: Moving from Talk to Written Conversation about Texts
This reading affirmed my understanding of the differences between shared, interactive, guided and independent writing. I discovered the importance of including drawing in my reading/writing programme to encourage my more reluctant writers to think about and engage with texts and ideas.
Understanding reading begins with thinking, talking and representing ideas. Oral language is the primary support for thinking and leads naturally to written communication.
Shared Writing: teacher and students work together to compose particular kinds of text - lists, summaries, letters, etc. The teacher is the scribe. It is similar to but should not be confused with 'language experience'. Once produced a piece of shared writing is completed children could illustrate and a 'big book' compiled of shared writing.
Interactive Writing: an approach to be used with younger children. Invite students to come up and contribute a letter, word or part of a word. Don't overuse ... it can slow down the production of a text.
Guided Writing: On the same page as me here. But we use this all the time currently. This is a daily occurrence in LC1.
Independent Writing: Children enjoy being given opportunities to write independently.
I will introduce more drawing as a reading/writing tool during guided sessions. I will use interactive writing with small groups to focus on specific learning intentions - eg. come and show me how to do a finger space, I want to spell 'went' .... can you come and show me where to find that word on the dictionary card ... you write it for me.
